Proximal origin transligamentous recurrent motor branch of the median nerve: implications for surgical safety.

An anomalous motor branch of the median nerve with proximal origin and traversing the transverse carpal ligament was encountered during carpal tunnel release, which could create an additional proximal danger zone. We recommend deliberate ulnar-sided and proximal to distal ligament division to minimize risk of damage to anatomic variants of the median nerve.
